Hello everyone, sorry for taking again so long to post something here. Things have been quite hectic the last couple of months (mom visiting from Colombia 3 months, change of city Birmingham to London, starting a great new job as Senior Production Executive at RPM Ltd, touring my mom all over England and Europe, and changing again house). So basically I have been very busy, and make me very sad that haven’t been able to write, but the good news are that now I have return with lots of ideas of how to make this blog better, with selected topics to talk about and take you to things that I know, think or impressed me. I have decided to write about some topics related to experiences, that had happened in the past, are happening right now, and some great people are working hard to make it happen. The topics are:

  1. History in Events – because there has been an amazing experiences out there that we might don’t know and want to know more about it
  2. What’s on – because is always important to know where is your next experience
  3. Job opportunities – People has helped me to move forward in my career, so I want to retrieve this and help those that are willing to go better in life like me
  4. My opinion about….. something
  5. Something that happened to me……. want to be a little bit personal here and share something with you
  6. Something interesting, because there is always something interesting out there
  7. Architecture and events – because how events would exist without structures, locations, spaces
  8. Personality – Someone who inspire me and will love to meet
  9. Colombia – because for you who haven’t been there will invite you to make it one of your life experiences and for those who have, to remember you how beautiful it is

There will not be a specific order for these topics, will come out as my inspiration comes. Something that I need from you (please!) is that you help me to build this space with your comments, will love to know more about what do you think. So check this space because here we go.

The Beauty of Prague March 15, 2010

Sorry for not keeping busy this blog, being away for a bit and on holiday as well, enjoying the beauties of Europe as a present from my mom of mygraduation (love her for this present) . Right now I’m in Prague, the city is beautiful but the weather is awful. I’ll never be able to get used to the cold and winter weather. I miss a lot my sunny and warm days (where are they?)

To not keeping this blog that empty, here it is Prague, with the view of the Charle’s Bridge and the Prague’s Castle on the back. Worth the visit if you haven’t being here yet, and if you have come again. But from the spring to be able to enjoy it as 100%.

Me in Prague

In 1971, Prague was denominated as UNESCO world heritage, few cities can say that.

My suggestions for Confex and TFM&A seminars

For this year Confex and TFM&A I have decided that these are the seminars I’m interest to attend and I recommend. And during the day I’ll try to attend to as many as possible. As I said in my twitter account it looks like I’ll be living at Earl’s Court this week.

For Confex Seminars programme click here and for Keynotes sessions programme here.

And for the Technology for Marketing and Advertising seminars click here and the Keynotes sessions here.

Kseniya Simonova – a Sand Illustrator – Amazing February 9, 2010

As a present for my graduation I got this amazing video showing how Kseniya Simonova an Ukrainian artist won the Ukraine’s Got Talent competition last year.

It’s simply AMAZING and make you even cry, to see how talent she is. Make me think how beautiful her live most be to be able to represent such beautiful moments in live.

IT’S OFFICIAL, I HAVE A MASTERS IN EVENTS AND EXHIBITION MANAGEMENT February 8, 2010

Last Monday 1st of February the day finally arrived and I could celebrate that I was graduating for my MA in Events and Exhibition Management at Birmingham City University (BCU).

It was a very important day for me, even that I had to wait a year after I finished my dissertation for the ceremony (when the FT students finished was too late for being at the ceremony in 2009), but that made that most of the people who started the MA in 2007 we could graduated together. Besides that, my mom could come from Colombia for this great moment, and finally someone from my family could see my other life, the life that I have here as foreign in England. Plus the person who made possible that we could have the best MA ever and put together all those amazing 14 future Events Managers could come and see us graduated. Thank you very much Mathilde Stein for teaching us so much and also be a mentor for us in our future as event professionals.

Here is a picture of us, already as Masters in events.

Masters' graduates

First Row: Jason Lunn, Duncan Sedgwick (Current MA Course Director), Beckie Davies.

Second Row: Carolyn Dawe, Ayesha Kaur and Naseem Akhtar

Third Row: Hannah Keates, Mathilde Stein, Me and Sarah Calhaem.

Missing: Shaun Seeley (couldn’t come to the ceremony) and Gul Altuntac, Baljit Sandu, Tariq Elkashef, Monica Cheng and Sherief Sanad, whose couldn’t complete the MA by the time of the ceremony. We miss you guys!

NEW BUSINESS CARD – MAGDA NIETO February 7, 2010

With the start of the New Year, I decided that it was time that I should have my new business card. I used to have one that said that I’m an Industrial Designer, is not that I’m not anymore, once you are designer you can’t stop being one. But now I’m also an Event Manager.

I want to thank Juan Morris from Emmersi for this great design.

Events Exhibitions UK 2010 January 25, 2010

After being for over 2 years in England, learning about the Events Industry and going to as many events as possible, I have found 8 exhibitions that worth going if you are interest in organising events and want to know all the last trends and technologies around.

These exhibitions are a combination of organisations who exhibit their product or service, seminars talking about what is happening in the industry that you as visitor need to know and networking sessions to meet the people who involved in the industry.

2010 Event Exhibitions calendar starts with:

-          Event Production Show: February 2 – 3. At Olympia. My main reason to go to this event these besides being the event where I can find all the production suppliers for my events is the seminar lead by Michael Eavis, founder and figurehead of Glastonbury. He will talk about the evolution of the world’s most famous festival.

  • Also I like the idea that they are donating £10 for Water Aid, by asking to the delegates to pay for attendance.

 -          International Confex: February 23 – 25. This is the major event that Events Industry has. Here is the place for you to meet everyone who is involved in this fantastic world. Confex has also an international space for countries, which are also promoting themselves as events – venues destinations. Their seminars are a variation of subjects, between; MarketingBusiness Skills & Personal Development, Organising & LogisticsIndustry Forums. Registration is still open and will be at Earls Court London.

 -          TFM&A: February 23 – 24. Technology for Marketing and Advertising, is an event happening at the same time as Confex, and worked as brother to the event, meaning, with one ticket you can access to both events. This event will show you and advice which are trends in technology that will help you to promote in this case your event (but actually is to promote whatever you want).

  • Last year I learn that those advertising campaign that appears right next to the page that I’m reading online, were made in a specially technology (that I don’t remember now) and had a lot of thought to actually send the message through without making you to close the window.

Registration is still open and will be at Earls Court London.

-          RSVP: April 28 – 29. Held at the beautiful exhibition space, The Business Design Building. This event is for all those event managers who are looking for suppliers in entertainment, catering, decorating, flowers, event companies, etc. The exhibition itself is beautiful decorated by each stand offering their best services. The registration is now open and is you are thinking where to get ideas for your event this is the event to go.

-          Internet World: April 27 – 29. Have your heard of Twitter, Facebook, the I-phone applications and you were wondering where you can meet and find the people who not only understand them but actually are the ones who create these amazing things? Well, this is the event where all of them come together, to show you can these are done.

  • I spent last year exhibition between the seminars, they were so full of attendees that sometimes I had to watched the seminars from outside (that was my only complaint, no enough space to seat to watch the seminars, but they promise to change that this year).
  • I learned and understood a lot about this amazing world that now everyone is involved.

Registration is now open and will be at Earls Court London.

-          Excite Show: June 23 – 24. This is the event for people who want to know how to exhibit. Suppliers who will help companies to exhibit, exhibition companies who know how to exhibit and all those suppliers you will need when you are doing an exhibition.

-          Event UK: September 21 – 22. Well, we have exhibitions, suppliers, production, but what about venues? Well, Event UK (formerly the National Venue Show), is the exhibition to get to know those venues around UK and there also some around the world. Here the sales departments of the venues come to show you why they (think) are the best for you and your event. The event is held in Birmingham at the NEC.

  • (This was my first exhibition in the UK, and was my first class in my MA in Event and Exhibition Management. Great memories and I also remembered collecting all the brochures for my first assignment. Thank to that I learned UK geography very well).

-          Showman’s Show: Is in October but don’t know the dates for this year. This event is in Newbury and is an outdoor exhibition, for live and outdoor events. At this event you will find all the suppliers to fulfil your field. From portable toilets, stages, seating arenas (my favourite Arena Seating), marquees, portable floors, portable stables (I like these ones). Is perfect is you are organising a festival. Loved the feeling on being in an outdoor event around my favourite people.

So if you would like to add something or let me know another event worth mentioning here, let me know leaving a comment.

Remember that comments all always welcome and love to know about your thoughts…

LINKS FOR JANUARY 22ND 2010. January 22, 2010

After a while of not actually writing anything here I decided that this 2010 would be different (hopefully are not just those New Year’s resolutions) and will write more. Today, I decided to share with you my Google reader list and tell you about the blogs I normally read.

Steve Gerrard Photography: I think this is one of my favourite photographers and I hope be able to have him for my wedding. Besides doing wedding photography, Steve portrait bands in a very unique and cool way.

ASH 10: Pete Ashton’s professional blog (the personal is here), used to talk about Social Media and what were his experiences about working in this field, but now is more related to what he does (not sure exactly what is that) but you can get a sense and learn about new things about online stuff from him.

Behind the scenes at Smile: is the blog from a new creative company of great people and talented designers called Smile, who opened the company more than a year ago and opened their offices last summer. I like to read them, because besides of what they do, they show their readers things that interested them and write about how they would like to have a better creative world. I think this is a good example of a company using a blog that shows that people who work there are humans and can have your same interests.

Capsule’s blog: This is the blog of a music promoter company who also create experiences through music events (remember Supersonic). This blog besides working as tool for promoting the events they organise, is the space where Lisa Meyer (one of the directors) share information about the type of music that Capsule promote, that I have to say is very eclectic.

Confesiones de una mente peligrosa: Unfortunately, for those who don’t understand Spanish won’t be able to read it. Is a Colombian blogger who use the tittles of the movies for inspiration to write about things that he wants to share. Is good if you want to know about movies, and to have a general knowledge about things.

Created in Birmingham: This blog talks about what is happening in the creative and artistic Birmingham. Events, shows, exhibitions, concerts, festivals, companies, people, venues, etc. This is the space to read if you are interest to know about what Birmingham has to offer and where you can find it. Very good guide, like it more than What’s On!

Experience this: If you are an event professional in England you must have heard about Ian Irving, if you haven’t is an experience person in Experiential Marketing. He has been as 20th in the CIT Power 50 influence people in the industry. If you are interest about events, experiential marketing, employee engagement, B2B, corporate, he is the guy to read.

Flatpack Festival:  This blog talks about what is happening inside the organization of one of the coolest film festivals. Flatpack Festival is held on March in Birmingham and I was lucky enough to be part of the team last year (working as the volunteer and ticketing coordinator).

More Channels than Venice: Did you know that Birmingham has more channels than Venice, well I didn’t. This blog will inform you about those things that you wouldn’t find that easy in Birmingham. Talks about what’s happening in the creative and artistic community in Birmingham. Is like having someone who collects all the fliers in the shops and talks about what is going on in just one place, here.

Needles and Hooks: If you are interest in textiles and how they can become in amazing pieces, you should how Sara design and create her stuff, especially cushions. They great thing is that she is inspired by vintage textiles to create her designs.

No puedo creer que lo hayan inventado: (I can’t believe they have invented) Again another Spanish blog, but the great thing about this, is that they write about objects and things founded online, which have a specific and interest characteristic.

El complejo de Prometeo: Prometeo’s complex, if you want to know about what is happening in the world with a point of view, you need to read him. What I like about this, is that with you found about things you didn’t know and also the information is given with a point of view. Sometimes I agree, sometimes I don’t.

There are more, but this are for now…..
